Educational activities organised in the Museum of Warsaw<\/strong> and its branches<\/strong> (the Museum of Pharmacy<\/strong>) are aimed at translating these issues into the language of children and youth and sharing knowledge in an accessible and engaging way.<\/p>\n

Who were the people who shaped the city from the 15th to\u00a0the 20th century? During the meeting we\u2019ll take a\u00a0look at\u00a0the history of the Old Town \u2013 the scale of its destruction and the phenomenon of its reconstruction. We\u00a0will deal with the challenges faced after the war by\u00a0the employees of the Biuro Odbudowy Stolicy (Capital Reconstruction Office). We\u00a0will take part in\u00a0a\u00a0discussion during which we\u00a0will play the role of the architects \u2013 modernists, socialist realists or\u00a0supporters of historical reconstruction. Will we\u00a0be\u00a0able to\u00a0convince residents to\u00a0the proposed reconstruction concept?\u00a0<\/p>\n

We\u00a0will ponder over whether and how a\u00a0small quarter can focus in\u00a0itself and demonstrate several hundred years of history of the entire city. What can surprise us?\u00a0 During the city game in\u00a0English, we\u00a0will discover the secrets and interesting facts about the Old Town and its history. We\u00a0will practice our perception, attention to\u00a0architectural details and creativity. By\u00a0completing the tasks, we\u00a0will learn about the destruction and\u00a0 reconstruction of Warsaw. We\u00a0will observe the symbols of the city. We\u00a0will also check whether the Warsaw mermaid can coexist in\u00a0the same legend with the Basilisk and the stone bear.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The game is prepared for students who speak English at\u00a0least B1 level, as\u00a0well as\u00a0their foreign friends, who would like to\u00a0learn about the history of the capital. <\/em><\/strong>Can objects speak? And if so, what would the things of Warsaw collected at\u00a0the Museum of Warsaw tell us? They would certainly tell us about the people who had once used them. Some of them were famous, others wealthy, and others still completely common. However, there is something that connects them all\u2014it is Warsaw. The Stories of Warsaw is a\u00a0class during which, through dialogue, we\u00a0introduce the participants to\u00a0the history of Warsaw and its residents, using exhibits collected by\u00a0the Museum. What are herbs and medicinal plants? Where can we collect them, how do they smell, and what do we use them for? What smells better \u2013 an oil obtained from a plant or a dried plant itself?<\/p>\n

During the classes, children will be able to learn about the basic types of herbs (e.g. mint, chamomile, lavender, fennel), as well as smell some\u00a0 dried herbs and oils. They will also explore the interior of an old pharmacy and learn how herbs were once stored and what tools were used to process them.<\/p>\n

In the workshop part, participants will be able to prepare their own herbal mixture in a mortar and take it home.<\/p>\n

During the lesson, students learn about changes that have taken place in the functioning of the pharmacy from the end of the 19th century to the present day. They follow fascinating history from the times when experiments were conducted in the pharmacy laboratory and new substances were discovered there, to the times when the manual production of drugs in the pharmacy practically disappeared.<\/p>\n

While exploring the exhibition, participants learn about medicines’ groups (drugs for the respiratory system, painkillers, heart drugs, dermatological drugs, etc.). What was uranium glass used for, and why brown-colored bottles are widely used to store medical substances? What information can be found in a book called pharmacopea?<\/p>\n

Working in groups, the participants will find answers to the selected questions.<\/p>\n
