Karol Tchorek’s Studio

Karol Tchorek’s studio is a unique place on the map of Warsaw, one of the city’s historic sites of artistic creation. Upon entering this place, one gets the impression that time has slowed down for a moment. It is a unique space – intimate, full of light and focus.
Sculptures, memorabilia, archives, and original furnishings have been preserved here. His most important works were created here, including Motherhood (1952), the tombstone of Władysław Strzemiński, Warsaw Autumn (1975), and the design of plaques commemorating street executions carried out by the Nazis in Warsaw.
During your visit, you will see models of the sculptor’s most important works. They are accompanied by pre-war sculptures. A special place is reserved for designs, drawings, and memorabilia related to the Nike Art Salon, a legendary spot on the cultural map of Warsaw, where artists, collectors, and art lovers used to meet.
Another unique part of the exhibition is the collection of sculptures by Leon Kudła, known as the “primitive from Powiśle.” It is a collection of works gathered by the sculptor over the years. It is a testament to his fascination with authenticity, raw form, and creativity outside the academic canon.
Karol Tchorek’s works are still present on the streets of Warsaw today. Often passed by in passing, yet enduring and significant. Bas-reliefs decorating buildings from the era, commemorative plaques of his design, as well as monuments. Walking around Warsaw, it is easy to come across traces of his work. Discreetly but consistently, they build the visual memory of the city.
Karol Tchorek (1904–1985), a sculptor, author of portraits and monuments, medalist and art dealer, built his Studio in the early 1950s from the remnants of a demolished annex of a tenement house at 36 Smolna Street. He transferred part of the furnishings and architectural details from his previous studio and gallery located at 63 Marszałkowska Street.
The Studio is open for viewing on Tuesdays between 10AM and 6PM, and on Saturdays between 10AM and 4PM.
Visiting the Studio is possible upon purchasing a ticket online or at the ticket desk of the Museum of Warsaw located at 42 Old Town Market Square.
