Guided tour of the “Lovely Is the Youth of Our Age. Photo Albums 1850-1950” exhibition with Izabela Pluta and the curatorial team

Guided tour with the curatorial team with the participation of the artist Izabela Pluta.

The exhibition “Lovely Is the Youth of Our Age. Photo Albums 1850-1950” is dedicated fully to photographic albums. It offers a unique opportunity to view over a hundred of rarely exhibited items from one of the largest collections of Warsaw photography. Photo albums from the 19th and 20th centuries are accompanied by the artworks of contemporary artists.

Izabela Pluta’s works focus on the materiality of a 19th-century album—its decorations and shapes—and also question whether an album is a carrier of memory of the past.

Izabela Pluta is Polish-born, Australian-based artist whose expanded photographic practice explores the intersection of materiality, temporality and place. She is a Senior Lecturer in visual art at UNSW Art & Design, Sydney. Her recent solo exhibitions include “Nihilartikel: Izabela Pluta” at UNSW Galleries (2022); “Variable Depth, Shallow Water”, Spazju Kreattiv, Malta, (2021); and “Figures of slippage and oscillation”, Artspace, Sydney (2018). Other recent commissions include Counter forces for Bundanon Regional Art Museum’s inaugural exhibition “From Impulse to Action” (2022); “Radical Slowness”, The Lockup, Newcastle (2022); “Blue Assembly: Oceanic Thinking”, The University of Queensland Art Museum (2022); and “The National 2019: New Australian Art”, The Art Gallery of New South Wales,Sydney (2019).  Her second artist book “Nihilartikel” with Australian publisher, Perimeter, was released in 2023 and in 2019, she was the recipient of the Perimeter Small Book Prize for her publication “Figures of slippage and oscillation”. Her local and international residencies include Air 3331 Chiyoda, Tokyo; the Australia Council for the Arts Studio, Barcelona; Cite des Arts International, Paris; The Art and Design Research Institute, University of Ulster, Belfast; Red Gate Gallery, Beijing; International Art Space Kellerberrin; and the Marrgu Residency, Durrmu Arts Aboriginal Corporation at Peppimenarti in the Northern Territory, Australia. Pluta is represented by Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert, Sydney.

Exhibition ‘Lovely Is the Youth of Our Age: Photo Albums 1850–1950‘ and the conference are part of the ‘Focus on photography’ grant implemented by the Museum of Warsaw and the National Museum of Iceland thanks to the Norwegian and EEA Funds.
